ITS Consumer Resource Information
Listed below is general information that is accessible to everyone
who is either attempting to protect or resolve matters related to
their identity. Numerous public and private sector agencies and
companies have information that can assist you in aspects of
identity theft. If your concern relates to the following categories,
contact the agency directly for help and information. Follow the
steps on the individual web pages to get your information.
5 tips to use when contacting agencies/companies
- Call all companies
first as you begin notifying them about the theft and then follow through
with written correspondence. This will assist in minimizing any additional
misuse of your identity, accounts, etc;
- Use certified mail
and request return receipt of proof to verify the receipt of all written
correspondence;
- Use documentation
to your advantage when dealing with companies. Whenever possible, use
copies of your original documents (never send originals) to support
your case such as a police report, postmaster report (mail stamp), and/or
credit report of unauthorized accounts;
- Never pay any bill
or charge that is a direct result of the theft of your identity. Paying
fraudulent charges creates uncertainty with fraud investigators and
collectors as to whether you are really a crime victim or someone who
is trying to avoid paying their bill(s)/debt(s);
- Retain your records
for future reference in dealing with various creditors, banking and
financial institutions and law enforcement authorities. Also keep records
and receipts of eligible expenses if you have personal identity theft
insurance. These documents will be needed for use in submitting reimbursement
claims.
